Project description

8inks' novel multi-layer curtain coating technology simplifies the manufacturing of battery cells. The cost-effective, high-throughput production method cuts production costs by up to 30% compared to current methods and is compatible with existing manufacturing infrastructure. 8inks creates value in two dimensions. Firstly, they increase production speed and quality and therefore optimize overall equipment efficiencies. The technology is readily applicable to the state-of-the-art batteries. Furthermore, 8inks has set their eyes on advanced battery technologies that struggle to scale, such as solid state batteries. The features of their coating technology are the missing link that is paving the way for the widespread adoption of solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Solid state batteries are considered the next generation of lithium ion batteries, offering many benefits in comparison to liquid-electrolyte batteries. While liquid electrolytes are flammable, solid-state electrolytes are non-flammable, thus also offering a significant benefit in terms of safety. Redefining manufacturing standards in the battery industry will unlock higher battery performance. The startup’s technology, which was patented through ETH, also allows the cells to be recycled and increases the charging speed.

Status/Results

Considering the projected growth of the electric vehicle market, 8inks is addressing the increasing global demand for lithium-ion batteries. 8inks has set up their own facilities in Schlieren and put in place a team of battery and production experts. They have forged industrial partnerships and secured a supply chain that allows them to manufacture and demonstrate advanced cell designs. They have implemented the full value chain from raw materials to final cell characterization in house. They have started piloting their technology with selected customers. As a next step 8inks is working with machine suppliers to implement their coating solution on an inhouse pilot line to fast-track the industrial deployment of their platform. They improve batteries by tailoring various electrode designs spanning from anodes, solid electrolytes and cathodes.
