Lessons learnt from 5 years of «First Ventures»

How to successfully launch a funding program? The five key ingredients.

December 19, 2024

The example of the First Ventures program offers five major lessons that can be applied to similar philanthropic initiatives.

Since its launch 2019, «First Ventures» by Gebert Rüf Stiftung has supported over 50 spin-off projects by students from universities of applied sciences (UAS) with funding exceeding CHF 6.3 million. Notable startups include Cowa Thermal Solutions (HSLU), Kuori (FHNW), and Project Circleg (ZHdK). Applications come from all cantonal UAS, with significant success achieved by HES-SO, BFH, and HSLU. The program has triggered additional funding exceeding CHF 22 million.

What were the key factors behind the program's rapid establishment?

  1. Analyze the funding landscape and identify gaps
To maximize value, it was essential to thoroughly examine the existing funding ecosystem. The «First Ventures» program fills a specific gap in the innovation funding chain for UAS. What Pioneer Fellowships and Innogrants are for ETH institutions, «First Ventures» represents for UAS: the first point of entry for UAS graduates before transitioning to programs like BRIDGE or Venture Kick.

  2. Engage stakeholders early and build strategic partnerships
Strong community backing and targeted collaborations are indispensable. Close cooperation with Swissuniversities, Venturelab, and the UAS enables effective engagement with target groups, enhances acceptance, and expands the program's reach.

  3. Establish efficient and transparent processes
The success of a support program also depends on a clearly structured application, evaluation, and decision-making process. The «First Ventures» program stands out with its streamlined and transparent procedures that instill confidence in both applicants and experts. Decisions for smaller grants of up to CHF 50,000 are made within one month, while larger grants of CHF 150,000 take three months.

  4. Tailor communication to target groups
Targeted communication directed at UAS and the use of appropriate channels are critical levers for success. Content must be clear, motivating, and tailored to the audience. Success stories from supported startups and a constant presence through on-site events like Venture Briefings have proven particularly effective.

  5. Regularly evaluate and adjust the funding strategy
A good support program is never static. Gebert Rüf Stiftung demonstrated, with the introduction of the «Proof», «Validate» and «Execute» funding options, how targeted adjustments can enhance effectiveness. This new offering has significantly increased demand and further clarified the program's positioning.
