Project description
Tuyoh links the consumers of household appliances in developing countries with capital providers. Our purpose is to fight global social inequality and climate change by making the most resource efficient appliances accessible, affordable and desirable.
Global welfare is rising. More than two billion people will soon be able to afford and access basic household appliances, like a fridge or a washing machine. The problem is, if mainly low-quality and unsustainable products are bought, global CO2 emissions will skyrocket. This scenario is very likely to happen, as low income households go for inefficient products because the up-front cost today are more important for their purchase decision than the lifetime benefits of the product. Therefore, inefficient products appear to be cheaper and thus more attractive than the sustainable option. With Tuyoh we aspire to solve this problem. It's quite simple: We have to make sustainable appliances more attractive than the cheaper but inefficient alternative. Tuyoh is the 1-stop-shop for sustainable household appliances. By bundling the services of capital providers, insurances and manufacturers we move the lifetime benefits of the sustainable product to the point of purchase making it the most attractive option on the market.
What is special about the project?
Tuyoh simultaneously fights climate change and global social inequalities through a smart technological solution. The potential impact of energy efficient household appliances is enormous. Globally, using best available technologies in energy-efficient refrigerators, ACs and fans would amount to savings of 870 TWh per year in 2030 (avoiding the release of 413 million tons of CO2). This is the equivalent to 50% of all the yearly flights worldwide. On the social side, Tuyoh has the potential of fostering social development and economic resilience. By freeing up time in the household, it empowers women to join the workforce, increases customer welfare, reduces food loss and waste and creates new jobs in the field of circular economy.
Status/Results
During the first stage of the programme, starting in February and lasting until the end of July, we will develop and conduct a pilot project. The goal is to conduct a pilot in one specific country with a concrete product and partner. To reach our goal we are in negotiations with different market participants such as banks and manufacturers. By conducting a pilot we will gain a better understanding of our end-consumer, establish partnerships and gain credibility and reach in the pilot market.
