Project management

Project description

Existing battery technologies struggle to provide high-energy storage and fast charging rates. The ETH Zürich and EMPA spin-off BTRY aims to redefine energy storage with its solid-state batteries, offering high energy density and the capability to charge in just one minute. By leveraging thin-film technology and innovatively stacking these thin cells, BTRY ensures fast charging, high-energy storage, and customizable battery properties. In addition, we emphasize environmental sustainability. Our solvent-free vacuum manufacturing process eliminates harmful substances and significantly reduces energy consumption.
Within this project, we will develop and fabricate minimal viable products of a solid-state battery using the research infrastructure at EMPA, and use them for pilot projects with our first customers. This project strengthens Switzerland's global position in battery production, drives local economic growth, and supports sustainability goals by reducing waste and toxic solvents in manufacturing.

Status/Results

At the project's start, we aim to optimize our fabrication methods to align with standard industry practices and initiate pilot production tests of our battery. We will increase cell capacity to meet the demands of IoT sector customers and engage with them to gain market traction and identify pilot project partners.
