Direction du projet

Description du projet

The project has aimed to produce a contextualized understanding of the patterns of constitutional transformation in the Central and Eastern part of our continent. With the contribution of both young and aspiring scholars as well as more experienced experts it has sought to examine the depth and width of constitutional change and norm transfer after the collapse of communism. It has also helped stimulate research methods and expertise in the wider area of European integration, within a framework where current trends of European law and politics are not systematically addressed.

Quelles sont les particularités de ce projet?

The project objectives are highly correlated with the policy and criteria of Gebert Rüf Stiftung. The project's innovative character stems from a combination of research and teaching activities (with obvious emphasis on the former element) that exploit a genuine multidisciplinary character combining legal aspects of constitutionalization yet at the same time touching on the political elements of enlargement and transition. The network that it has created is transnational and covers the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Switzerland. The innovative aspects of the project, in line with the priorities of Gebert Rüf Stiftung, relate to the opportunities that the project has provided for scholars in the countries of CEE to transmit their knowledge and experience of constitutional workings with a focus on the comparative facets of the studied phenomenon.

Etat/résultats intermédiaires

During the first stage of implementation of the project, a network of experts on transitional aspects of constitutional law in Central and Eastern Europe has been put together. The Chair of Comparative Law at UNILU is engaged in scientific collaboration with partner institutions and research centres in Bulgaria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary and Romania. The organization of individual short research stays at UNILU of selected experts from our partners was first completed and subsequently led to the production of preliminary research results in the form of individual scientific papers. A round-table meeting of all network members was then scheduled for July 2009. Following the submission of final scientific reports from the individual contributions, the volume «Constitutional Evolution in Central and Eastern Europe - Expansion and Integration in the EU» was published in December 2010.
