The Swiss National EdTech Testbed Program is a Swiss-wide initiative that aims to support the digital transformation of education in Switzerland with appropriate technological solutions and provides a platform that brings together schools and educators with developers of innovative educational technology tools.
It is a national cross-curricular “test-and-learn” program that offers an environment in which public schools can test and try out technological innovations/EdTech solutions in real-life settings with the support of the Swiss EdTech Collider team, while providing direct feedback – in a co-creative approach - on these tools to the EdTech startups (developers) so that they can be better adapted to the needs of teachers/schools. The educational technologies and tools to be tested are selected on the basis of the needs of schools and in collaboration with them. In addition, it is ensured that they offer added educational value and can be meaningfully used in the classroom.
This initiative proposes a unique approach to connecting the various stakeholders in the public education system, fostering exchange and dialogue with the aim of creating better-adapted EdTech solutions for schools. To make the results accessible to all and to create added value for the entire education system in Switzerland, specific “Good Practice Papers” and “Testbed Magazines” will be created based on the findings of these 'tests' and distributed through a variety of communication channels and partner organizations.
The Swiss National EdTech Testbed Program was officially launched in December 2022 with the support of the Gebert Rüf Stiftung and the Jacobs Foundation. To date, more than 200 schools and more than 400 teachers, together with a total of more than 7,500 students, have conducted over 500 “tests” (the numbers are continuously updated on the
website. These results, along with the continued demand, clearly show that there is enormous demand from schools for an initiative like the testbed program.
In addition, a total of three different “Good Practice Papers” and the first official “Testbed Magazine” have been created and presented to the public since the launch of the program, in which the various added values of the initiative itself, but also the specific EdTech tools for the education community, are presented.
For the upcoming project phase II 2025–2026, the goal is to apply and integrate the testbed program more specifically in the French-speaking part of Switzerland after its successful implementation in German-speaking Switzerland in phase I 2023–2024.
Furthermore, it is planned to continue to make further results and the added value of the tested instruments available to a broad public and, in particular, to decision-makers in the Swiss education sector (cantons, government) in the form of additional 'Good Practice Papers' and 'Testbed Magazines' and other media (videos).
