Projektbeschreibung

Approximately 150 scholars, policymakers, experts, students and researchers from the Black Sea region and beyond (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Romania, Turkey, Germany, France, UK, USA, etc.) gathered at the ASCN Conference on «Security, Democracy and Development in the Southern Caucasus and the Black Sea Region», held on 11-13 October 2012 at Kadir Has University, Istanbul. The conference was organised in cooperation with Kadir Has University. It was co-financed by Gebert Rüf Stiftung and the State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER).

The conference addressed the interaction of security, democracy and development in the Southern Caucasus and the wider Black Sea region. Specific topics and debates were explored within and between these broad themes.

Was ist das Besondere an diesem Projekt?

The conference offered a forum for the presentation and discussion of on-going research projects. Panels and roundtables analysed evolving state level, regional and international processes, presented new scholarship and allowed the exchange of ideas from a wide variety of national, theoretical and intellectual perspectives. The mixed format of the conference (keynote speeches, round tables and thematic panels) bringing together experienced experts, junior scholars and policy-makers enabled intensive intellectual debates based on diverse theoretical approaches (political science, international relations, sociology, anthropology).

Stand/Resultate

The conference served as a means for international networking, providing international scientific exchanges while addressing the many frozen conflicts in the Southern Caucasus and Black Sea regions.

The conference will result in a book project gathering the best papers presented during the conference. The aim is to publish within approximately 24 months a book with 15 good contributions from young scholars. This is the first concrete step towards the strengthening of the academic links between Switzerland, Turkey and the Black Sea region in general.

Medienecho

The conference received large media coverage. Videos of the roundtables, pictures as well as videos posted on Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty (RFERL) are available.
