Projektbeschreibung

This final ASCN conference, to be held in November 2016 in Tbilisi, should first of all allow our ASCN project partners to come together and to discuss – a last time in the context of the ASCN programme – the results of their research projects and to present the future direction of their research as well.

The conference will also prepare a forum to think about ASCN achievements in this field and, more generally, about the challenges confronting social science researchers in the South Caucasus (“Changing social sciences in changing societies” - which societal challenges were met and which still remain to be addressed by social sciences in the region?). And last but not least, this final conference will also focus for a last time on the political and social changes and transformations in the South Caucasus.

Was ist das Besondere an diesem Projekt?

In order to achieve these objectives, the conference will be organised as follows:
a) A general session with keynote speakers from abroad and from Georgia and Armenia to discuss “lessons learned and not learned” with regard to the transformation process in the respective countries as well as social sciences in the region;
b) A panel session allowing project partners to discuss the results of their research together with colleagues from the region and Europe
Two public panel discussions (“round tables”), with one focusing on social sciences and the other on the political situation and its dynamics in Georgia and in Armenia.

Stand/Resultate

The conference was successfully conducted on November 18 and 19 in Tbilisi. The keynote speech of Edward Lucas entitled “Realpolitik and the New Cold War” drew a large audience of students, the interested public, as well as, media outlets. The conference was used a forum to discuss the current developments in the region as well as the state of social sciences in Georgia and Armenia and ASCN’s contribution to their development.
